The Dairy Project's Atlas

The dairy sector in Egypt has been identified as a priority for agricultural research and development in the new Agricultural Strategic Plan for Egypt in 2030. This Atlas is the product of an exploratory and empirical research carried out in the DAIRY research project entitled "Understanding the traditional functioning of the milk supply chain in El Cairo City, Egypt" (funded by the AIRD 2012-2015).

Atlas on the traditional dairy sector in Greater Cairo (Egypt)

The primary objective of the Atlas was to provide evidence on the dynamics, strengths and weaknesses of the traditional milk sector for decision-makers and developers. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of this sector necessitated from the start a systemic approach to grasp the interactions between the multiple actors and functions along the chain and a multidisciplinary approach in order to identify the social, economic and technical multi-factors of this dynamic. This project was led by a Franco-Egyptian research team of varied and complementary disciplines, bringing together researchers from the APRI (Animal Production Research Institute), the University of Cairo in Egypt and CIRAD, INRA in France.
