A Synthesis Book on Livestock Grazing Systems

This new book has just been released. It deals with Livestock grazing systems and sustainable development in the Mediterranean and Tropical areas. It represents a synthesis of the research work recently conducted by the Selmet research unit.

Family ruminant livestock farms in Mediterranean and tropical territories contribute directly to eight of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. These farms have long been overlooked by agricultural investment efforts, yet they have undeniable assets that could be used to achieve these SDGs in interaction with other forms of livestock production present in territories. However, they also face constraints that are challenging their sustainability. The interdisciplinary synthesis presented here aims to answer three key questions: how can the adaptive capacities of these farms be strengthened to respond to climatic, social and economic changes? How can we improve their efficiency at different levels of organization and at social, economic and environmental levels? Finally, how can these farms contribute to innovation processes for the agroecological transition? This book is based on research recently published by the joint research unit Selmet (CIRAD-INRAE-Institut Agro) on a variety of sites around the world and in a broad international partnership. It is intended for the teaching and scientific community, students, and stakeholders in the livestock sector and in the territories, working at different decision-making levels. The English version of the book has been published in April 2023.
